Investing in a Bedroom

A home is a man’s castle and the bedroom is said to be where many historic decisions are made more than anywhere else.  That may be true as the bedroom provides the last oasis of a man to relax at the end of the day and the quality of the room molds the quality of his decisions after a good night’s rest.  And for most people on the planet, the bedroom is also where they were made, literally.  It is no wonder then that of all the rooms in the house, the bedroom often eats up the most in any budget for constructing a home.
No matter what size the bedroom is, it is the quality of bedroom sets and furnishing that create the ambiance responsible for its inviting appeal at the end of the day. Among professional interior design decorators, the advice is one - never scrimp on your bedroom.
An investment, not an expense
At the heart of the modern bedroom is your bedroom set consisting of the bed and associated furniture like night stands on either side of the bed and a chest at the foot, along with wardrobe bureaus, drawers and armoires, and dressers.  If you are in the market for furnishing your home, consider your bedroom as an investment that can become an heirloom for your kids and will only grow in value over time as an antique when properly taken cared of.
Once you’ve made your decision on the design motif for your bedroom, obtaining the best bedroom furnishings start with getting only those crafted with the best woods.  You can go for Chinese and European antiques of the last 100 years and you can be sure your bedroom furniture investment will continue to appreciate.
The main attribute of a good set of bedroom furniture is the quality of the wood they are made of and the craftsmanship that went in their construction.  Solid oak wood in beds are the preferred hardwoods for a timeless bedroom set.  And going for fine names in furniture like Broyhill and Legacy is often your guarantee they will last.
Some of the better crafted beds can range in price from $3,000 to $4,000 with antiques costing twice or more.  There are also bedroom sets that already include side night stands, armoires and dressers as part of a bedroom showcase. They are often priced as discounted bedroom furniture.  Just make sure they are made of fine hardwoods like Oak wood. And if you wait a little longer, some of the slow moving and expensive furniture stocks get significant discounts.

The Challenge of Small Bedrooms

Not every homeowner is blessed with a bedroom large enough to house the typical bedroom sets we’ve taken for granted.  Putting in a queen size bed could easily take up more than 60% of the bedroom floor space, especially in some low cost apartments and townhouses.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the bedroom to speed.  That’s often the challenge and it’s great to know there are furniture and interior jobs that provide some creative solutions to the dwelling space problem.
Interior Treatment
Firstly, there are interior treatments that you can do to a small bedroom that create an illusion of space, the most effective of which is the use of full-size wall mirrors.  Your only need one side of the room to have full length mirrors and closet doors will do the job.  Mirrors are known to impart an illusion of doubling the room size.
Using lighter colors like pastels on walls can also add to an illusion of space. A light grey or pale blue carpeting and white corkboard ceiling is a great interior treatment for small rooms.  Using lightly shaded sheered curtains can also help as they permit light to peer through while minimizing their harshness.
Smaller Furniture
For a couple, it’s basic to have at least a queen size bed but you may need to be more discerning when choosing one.  Forget about fancy headboards or footboards that can only take up space.  Also bear in mind that not all queen size beds have the same dimensions and there are quite a lot of manufacturers that shave off an inch or two from standard dimensions to save on production cost. They are bit smaller without the consumer noticing.  But for practical purposes, unless you’re a seven-footer basketball player, these dimensional shavings won’t really matter.  And you’d be well-advised to scout around for the smallest queen size bed you can find.
Another option to consider are those sofa beds that you can deploy as full beds at night.  If you are single, this is an excellent option, though there are sofa beds that can deploy into queen sizers for couples.
Dressers also come in smaller footprints.  Some are just small tablets anchored on wall, have no legs and their mirrors are hung on the wall instead of attached on the dresser.  This can be a good option for final grooming touches while letting your bathroom hold the rest of your make-up or grooming kits.  In short, you can furnish a small bedroom in an apartment like what most single rooms in hotels have and you’d be amazed there are bedrooms sets that can do the job neatly.

The Bedroom Set Grows With You

Some of the fondest memories are associated with living with your parents as a growing kid.  And the bedroom occupies much of that memory.  For parents about to raise a family, a little planning in arranging the house to make way for your first little darling can be one of your best investments in nurturing a person.
The Evolving Bedroom
For growing children, planning for their bedrooms can be more demanding that just getting a collection of furniture for your first-born.  A crib is a natural for your baby or toddler aged 0 to 1 year. You then add a child’s chest drawer for the baby’s clothes but all the room is mostly made of playthings.. After that, you would be looking at purchasing your kid’s first real bedroom set consisting mainly of his first bed.
You don’t run out to by an adult bed for a 2-year old and most kid’s bedrooms have beds that retain the playful or imaginative character of a child’s toy.  Hence, you have batmobile beds or shoe-like fairy tale beds that are sized just right for the growing child.  They also come in various sizes that can be good for kids ups to 5 years or until the kid reaches about 7 - 8 years old. If the bed has been designed and crafted robustly, it should last that long.  Otherwise, you could be looking at getting two or more purchases of the same type of bed, especially if the kid is among the overactive types who frequently jump up and down their bed.
After this period, you start to face another daunting decision, whether to start investing on a regular adult single bed or go for their junior versions that are often 1-2 foot shorter.  It shouldn’t be a problem if your kid is extraordinarily tall for his age so that you can easily anticipate he or she would outgrow the size of typical children’s beds early on.  Otherwise, a junior bed typical a foot or two shorter than regular beds would be just right for your pre-teenagers.
The Final Selection
The largest growth spurts occur during the teenage years or adolescence. It is during this time when it makes better sense to invest in an adult sized bed, still the single bed type.  And when you do, look for the sturdy hardwood beds that can last a lifetime, often allowing you to pass on to their younger siblings as they go off to college or lead their own lives.
By this time, or before going to college, your child’s bedroom set would have evolved to consist of a larger wardrobe closet, a chest drawer, night stand and a mirror. For the girls, a dresser can’t be missed.  Expect to invest in a desk cabinet for a TV set or stereo system as well as a PC table.
